Strict Abortion Laws Finally Abolished, a Win for Women across the Globe.
25th May, 2018 will be marked as one of the greatest days in Ireland’s history. The republic of Ireland voted to change its strict abortion laws and saw a landslide victory- a true win of mankind!
Previously, Abortion was available in Ireland only when there was a risk to the woman’s life, including through suicide. And pregnant women had to travel to Britain or had an illegal termination with pills bought online.
But when finally a referendum was proposed and people were asked to vote, 723,632 people voted in favour of abolishing the abortion laws. It was a two-thirds majority: 66.4% yes and only 33.6% no.
It was a much anticipated win as the exit polls too suggested the same and the campaigners were seen happily celebrating. After the results, Irish PM Leo Varadkar said there would be “no more lonely journeys across the Irish Sea, no more stigma and no more isolation”.
Now the question that arises is what would happen next?
In March, Health Minister Simon Harris had summarized what would be in the government legislation if the people voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment. He had said that-
- The women could access a termination within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
- However, beyond 12 weeks, abortions would only be permitted where there is a risk to a woman’s life or of serious harm to the physical or mental health of a woman, up until the 24th week of pregnancy.
- Terminations would also be permitted in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.
This is happy- happy news for women across the globe as the rights they were fighting for are finally coming their way. With this victory, we can hope that other such countries too bring a reform as soon as possible.
